Knowing worth having

Walking among the trees today

I received an image of myself

suddenly, mysteriously,

and it took my breath away

Where did that come from, I thought

still wonderstruck by such magic

We humans yearn to know ourselves

so we can hold on

so we can survive

the emptiness which always beckons

But the knowing of ourselves worth having

arises in ways unknown

Showing up not because of our chase

but despite it

Perhaps the wind sweeps it into us

Perhaps the trees are whispering our true name

Perhaps the sun shines

little clues into our hearts everyday

Rock has called me home

more than once

And Hawk has swooped down to stop me

as his eyes bore into mine

with an urgent message

still undulating in my body

We are formed by countless such moments

when life silently imprints itself into our knowing

while we are busy

building monuments to mere identities

It is delightful to be surprised

by our own true face

when we are shown it

without warning or fanfare

Like the Great Artist,

revealing her portrait of us,

still soaking wet

from lavish love strokes

yet for some reason ready now

to be ecstatically shared
